Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday, capping a stunning ascent for the 34-year-old state lawmaker, who was set to become the city’s most liberal mayor in generations.
In a victory for the Democratic party’s progressive wing, Mamdani defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani must now navigate the unending demands of America’s biggest city and deliver on ambitious — skeptics say unrealistic — campaign promises.
With the victory, the democratic socialist will etch his place in history as the city’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. He will also become the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on Jan. 1.
It has been fucking glorious to see racist white men foaming at the mouths in a psychotic tantrum over this.
Their pain and tears brings good vibes and energy unto us all
It’s almost like the most hated man in New York endorsing his opponent helped him in some way.
Mamdani is a pretty good politician as well, not perfect, but good.
A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow.
Does anyone have a breakdown of the wins for traditional Democrats and Progressives?
Lets fucking goo progressives
a bunch of other states have democratic wins as well. missispi supermajority in the house was broken for the first time by democrats, virginia, and another state.
although I would prefer to see more secular politicians, if we are going to have a leader who’s religious its good to have more diversity so christians don’t gain too much of a majority
I just hate how he promotes “affordable” housing and does nothing to advocate work from home. Every affordable unit is booked 10yrs in advance while developers build 150 condos and have 10 affordable. Literally tricky dickle down economics.
Can he promote work from home? Maybe for city employees. But what can he do about private companies that are paying for expensive Manhattan offices for the prestige and don’t want them to be empty?
That we don’t afford consumers luxuries to lure them in, they need to fill their own neighborhoods. If no one wsnts to work there, maybe they need more lucrative and exciting work.
congratulations and many more days to come for which to deal with the ruling class
This is not World News.
After all, NYC is not part of the world.
Oddly enough, the NYPD have offices internationally, in Qarar, Israel, Colombia, Germany, and numerous other countries. Also, the New York health department is the one that cracked open the case on lead contamination in turmeric farming in Bangladesh. It’s probably one of the most international cities, for whatever that means.
Even the smallest village in some jungle is part of the world. But that doesn’t make its politics world news.
right but what about the other stuff i said
Strong disagree. This greatly affects the politcal system of the United states. You just dont see how momentous it is, which I can understand.
You say it yourself, “political system of the United states”. That’s not the world.
can you give some examples of things that would count as world news to you? I would think world news is stuff that affects everyone throughout the world. U.S. politics affects everyone quite a bit.
Shout out till the first fake outrage article from the New York Post. They are going to be working overtime. To make it seem like he is the devil. Good luck bro. Remember, you wanted this job. No take backsies. lol
There’ll be articles about the crime rate and all under a month I assume, isn’t that standard for any mayor let alone an anti establishment one? I barely know much about him. Just that he has good ideas he wants to implement so congrats New York on your fine mayor.
To be fair unsure your exact intent I just wanted to mention from what I’ve read the hit articles always come soon after the election. At face value I take the first part, for the second part, anyone that can become mayor of New York would be ready for that.
I just mean as a silly joke. You won it. You gotta stick it out now. Because politics as the mayor of NYC is a beast. He may regret it one day. Just as a pure exhaustion type of experience.
Anything that is hard and worth doing will make you exhausted, some things are worth the exhaustion. I couldn’t do it, glad some people with good ideals can.
Based woke brown man. Cope and seethe chuds.
Based woke brown man
You talking about jesus??
He wasn’t based, he was nailed.
Nailed it
And I heard he was hung like this
then impaled by the spear of longinus
…then we can dig it!
I am Trump’s malignant hernia and I endorse this result.
Malignate faster please
I’m spreading the good news throughout his body as fast as I can.
I have here a crisp $50 with your name on it if you go any faster.
Seconded!
This is beautiful! I’ll be quoting you.
Godspeed
his centaur feet is going to cause his knees to collapse.
😆
This is great news. However, I am still dumbfounded on how 42% voted for the other guy. He is literally a sexual assaulter and he was endorsed by Trump and Elon Musk! How is it that so many people still voted for him?
Mamdani could not have had a better campaign, yet, he had just ~8% more votes. If the other guy ran a just tiny bit better campain, things could have been very different.
I am trully happy that Mamdani won, but yet, I am left scared at the state of things. He should have had 70/80% of votes. After all that has been happening in the US for the last 9 months or so, there is only a 8% number of votes separating the two sides? Holly molly, that is scary.
I read that Mamdani polled at 1% back in February, about 9 months ago. Cuomo was a former governor of the state, so was his father, and his brother had a show on CNN so they had stacked named recognition. Thankfully negative recognition as well, given Andrew’s behavior. Still, to go from 1% to over 50% in 9 months is an incredible result for Mamdani.
I’m 100% for Mamdani, but wasn’t the sexual assault case dismissed against Cuomo? Some people really do get falsely accused of sexual assault and it ruins their life. We should not try to normalize calling him an assaulter if it’s not true.
It wasn’t 1 person that accused him. Are you saying 13 women got together and decided to lie? Also it was dismissed because the DA refused to prosecute. It didn’t even go to trial so these women didn’t even have an opportunity to tell their side in court.
“Investigators found the accounts of all 11 women to be credible and corroborated by a “mountain of evidence,” including emails and text messages. This report led to Cuomo’s resignation in August 2021.”
Yea, Clearly the poor guy was framed. /s
First of all, it was a 3 way race, against far better known candidates. He was running an untested Socialist campaign, against ferocious propaganda from BOTH sides. The voters had to remain courageous, ignore ALL that, and tell the “experts” that they didn’t care, something that they historically don’t tend to do. By all standard political theory, he should have been crushed by 50 points.
In America, many races are within a few points. It’s not at all unusual to have a race decided by only a point, or even less. In any race, an 8 point lead is significant. For an unknown Socialist, coming out of nowhere, against the most incredible bi-partisan smear campaign I’ve ever seen, to win by 8 points, is an enormous victory.
Both MAGA and established Democrats are terrified today. The Progressive Left just fired the first shots of the New Civil War, and hit every target.
Great context, thanks.
I don’t think many established Democrats are terrified. If anything, they’re hopefully learning lessons. Get your damn fingers out of the wind trying to test which narrative will appeal to the most people, and instead do what makes sense and show an actual vision for what your district/city/state/country can look like.
Oh, they most definitely are terrified. They were endorsing Cuomo over Mamdani, despite Cuomo being poison, AND the fact that the voters were always extremely clear in their preference for Mamdani. They don’t fucking care what we want, they want us to do as we’re told.
These weakling motherfuckers better get on board, or they’re going to get run over. America is about to get a massive overhaul, and if the Establishment Dems don’t get their shit together, they will be considered as destructive as MAGAs, and will get kicked the political balls right along with them.
Who endorsed Cuomo?
The enemies of progress own most of the major US news outlets. I think that is the biggest reason why so many people voted for a dipshit like Cuomo.
A second possibility is name recognition. Now that Zohran gets to run New York for awhile, his name and ideas will spread. That means during the next round of elections, he becomes the defending champ with all the advantages that brings to the table. If he is a good leader, he probably will have a much greater margin of votes than Cuomo ever did.
As much of a POS as Cuomo is, he’s been elected before and a lot of older people trust him because of that, for reasons I can’t fathom. He was simultaneously a terrible candidate who also had a high floor.
Though I 100% agree that it’s disgusting how many Americans don’t seem to care about the character of their leadership, because it absolutely matters. You don’t get to whine about corrupt, uncaring politicians when you consistently reward them with your vote.
However, I am still dumbfounded on how 42% voted for the other guy. He is literally a sexual assaulter and he was endorsed by Trump and Elon Musk! How is it that so many people still voted for him?
because too many Americans still think “wE aRE NoT thEre YEt!”
It’s all about money, and money brings out the worst in people.
People who vote for law and order or over things like “crime” that are displaced from the real statistics are fucking morons and will always vote their emotions.
Look at biden’s election, a few hundred thousand people, three of those 5 states by 30k.
One would think they would have tried to be popular after that.
People do not realize what is at stake and how both sides will fail them generally, or how tjey will not fail them as with mamdani.
You don’t have to flip a lot of votes to steal an election, just the right number, in the right places. That’s how you end up with Trump at the top of an otherwise straight Democratic ticket. Both Dems and Republicans claim there were millions of them, and they were all concentrated in the swing states, for some unexplained reason.
And yet, I’ve never met one of those split ticket voters, nor have I ever seen one on TV. Have you?
Split tickets in the Swing States. That’s according to both parties, who agree that the one election that was necessary to keep Trump out of prison was the only thing in his entire life that he DIDN’T cheat on, and the election was “Fair & Square.”
Not saying you’re off base, but take a look at New Hampshire. We love to split. We currently have a Republican governor, entirely Dem congressional delegation, and did NOT go for Trump last November.
I’m a social anarchist and I’m loath to admit it, but I voted for our R governor in 2020 during COVID because he was doing a good job managing the crisis. Guy was a total cheeseball otherwise, but he was holding daily press conferences and pushing reasonable policy that kept case counts low during the worst of it.
It’s my first time and hopefully only time voting R. I just didn’t think we needed to change things up during such a crisis when it was being managed well, and we’ve had totally ineffective D governors in the past who could have really screwed things up. It also helps that our gubernatorial terms are only 2 years rather than 4 and, yeah, I was pretty sick of him by the end of the 2 years.
The 2 party split has always been a bit different in New England, especially VT, NH and ME. Our Republicans have tended to be somewhat reasonable people you disagree with, but could still hang out with and they could be trusted to get things done in their own way. (It’s probably due to our education actually being somewhat high-quality lol). National identities are starting to creep their way in as the old guard dies out, however.
So there, now you have met a split ticket voter.
I’m not saying that people don’t vote split tickets. Of course they do. I’m an Unaffiliated Independent, I voted split tickets for years, until the Republican Party decided to officially become the party of Treason & Corruption.
I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about voting a straight Democratic ticket, with TRUMP at the top. Not some random Republican for dogcatcher - Trump. The idea that strong Democrats could vote an entire straight ticket, but still vote for Trump is ludicrous.
You claim to be a split ticket voter for governor, but were you a split ticket voter for Trump? Do you know anybody up there in split-ticket land that were? Have you even HEARD of such a person?
I’m sure there are few, but they are as rare as white squirrels. There certainly weren’t millions of them, and the real problem is that BOTH parties leaped on the “fair & square” bullshit almost as soon as the polls closed. There were no studies, no investigations, etc. into what was certainly the crookedest election in America history. They didn’t even demand it, only to be turned down by the controlling MAGAs. They just decided to cooperate with the psychopathic MAGAs and pretend it didn’t happen. The Democrats themselves, the injured party, seemed to jump to that conclusion faster and harder than even the Republicans. The Dems were clearly too cowardly to take on that fight, so they just surrendered the American people to the treasonous Nazis pedophiles.
It is because of things like this that the American people have lost ALL confidence in the Democratic party. The MAGAs are excited by that, and in their limited lack & white view of the world, they think it means that the American people love MAGA instead. They are too intellectually limited to understand that it is possible for the American people to despise BOTH parties for their betrayals.
What we want is a hard reset, and a new try at a new government, one that is truly “Of the People, For the People, and By the People,” and NOT the Sociopathic Oligarchs. They caused this mess, and they’re going to pay for it.
Yeah, you raise multiple very good points. I wooshed what you were saying pretty hard
There is a lot of much racists, xenophobic, socialistophobe and communistophobe in the new york and the usa
I’m jealous of NYC right now, wish someone had those sorts of policies in Portland.
I think this is the start of something much bigger. :)
They do: you! Run for local office and help infuse some vitality back into a tired, corrupt political system.
I don’t think anyone would vote for a tired, disabled trans woman with two strokes and two jobs, who has nothing more than an associates degree.
But I will do what I can.
You had your chance to elect the lady with the cargo bike…
This is fantastic and I wish him the best. He’s going to need the best communications team any politician has had thus far. All the odds and big money interests are stacked against him. He’s going to be attacked from every conceivable angle, from every level of government. If he remains true and righteous, he’ll persevere.
If the dems are even half there at this point they will rally ny as a bastion and make that city shine. Show what proper government attention looks like. Unfortunately they will probably do absolutely nothing to help and many small things that manage to only hinder. Let’s hope he shines though it all.
That already happened during the election. Can’t say I’m worried about his PR team’s ability to handle the onslaught.
I fully expect the media to start manufacturing bullshit issues the second he’s sworn in though.
One of the more interesting polls out of this was whether voters were casting in support of or against a candidate.
86% of Mamdani voters were voting out of support of their candidate.
Half of Cuomo voters were voting against another candidate. (Mamdani.)
Voting against a candidate is a losing strategy.
Candidates control which way those winds go by having ideas or not.
ZombiFrancis is a great username.
Kudos. Francis wasnt perfect but he seemed to try harder than average popes. Thanks, though it is a username I have used variously for probably 20+ years.
A long-term losing strategy, yet short term it normally reliably drums up support in the kind of range that can tip an election. Quite eye-opening to me that an election can still be won with far-from-center politics.
Please tattoo this onto every member of the DNC
Or brand. Lets go with branding, after a good hog tie when they try to run away. They aren’t the best trained of critters.
I’m enjoying the unhinged rants I’m seeing from conservative social media. They’re not happy and it’s a fantastic read
both the DNC(old guard, DInos) and the gop donors were going in with the propaganda against madamni for months
Yes, but they aren’t the ones making incoherent social media rants rn.
Hell even my local republican congressman got on the unhinged rant train. Only words he missed on the bingo card were 9/11 and communism
Really enjoyed the Daily Show’s quip about ushering in “a communist 9/11”, where every building takes a little damage.
What social media are you on where you see a bunch of right-wing diatribes…?
Basically any of my local news networks accounts and community pages/accounts.
Welcome to the south!
Even some leftists accounts I follow that are celebrating are getting brigaded by upset conservatives. Honestly it’s been good entertainment
