Claim that Tren de Aragua planned to attack officers was widely shared – only for FBI to later acknowledge it was mistaken, internal files show
An unverified rumor that Venezuelan gang members were preparing to kill police officers spread like wildfire through US law enforcement agencies last year, internal records reveal, only for federal officials to later quietly acknowledge the claim was mistaken.
The intelligence report, which appears to have first been disseminated by a local New Mexico police department in July 2024, suggested that the Tren de Aragua (TdA) gang had directed its members to “fire on or attack” law enforcement. The vague assertion quickly traveled among law enforcement agencies. It even made its way into a formal proclamation by Texas governor Greg Abbott, and was repeated by Republican Congress members as evidence of the dangers of Venezuelan immigrants and Democrats’ border policies.
Months later, however, the Federal Bureau of Investigation wrote in an internal report that claims of a TdA “directive to actively target US law enforcement” were inaccurate.
I’m sorry, but had anyone here ever even heard of Tren de Aragua before the GOP started talking about them non-stop?
Has anyone seen evidence of this gang separate from any GOP reporting or involvement? I’m pretty fucking plugged in, but I’d never once read or heard that name before all of this.

What strikes me is that this article would never have been written had the FBI not acknowledged the truth. We’re still reliant on the institutions that are being corrupted to help document the corruption…
The FBI isn’t being corrupted, it’s being utilized. Haven’t you noticed that so many of our institutions were tools laying around for fascists to pick up? Like the machinery was already in place and oiled.
That’s why they say the US has “slid” into fascisim, because we didn’t have to move far.
How does the FBI compare to the federal/national police forces of other countries that makes it more susceptible?

I doubt this was just an innocent mistake by dedicated law enforcement trying to do their job. These assholes are all awash in right-wing propaganda and happy to stir up fear to support their chosen political outcomes.
