LOS ANGELES (AP) — There are thousands of illegal marijuana farms around the country.
But when the federal government decided to stage one of its largest raids since President Donald Trump took office in January, it picked the biggest legal grower in California.
Nearly two weeks later, the reason for the federal raid at two Glass House farm sites northwest of Los Angeles remains unclear and has prompted speculation. Some say the raid was intended to send a chilling message to immigrants in the U.S. illegally — but also to rattle the state’s legal cannabis industry.
Meanwhile, the Republican Trump administration has been feuding with heavily Democratic California over funding for everything from high-speed rail construction to wildfire relief, so it’s also possible Glass House was pulled into a broader conflict between the White House and Sacramento.
“There are plenty of other places they can go to find illegal workers,” said political consultant Adam Spiker, who advises cannabis companies. “A lot of people believe there is a hint of politics in this. It’s federal enforcement coming into California to go after cannabis.”
Because Trump wants to make the cartels stronger and on his team. Soon we’ll see deportations to cartel strongholds.
I thought states rights mattered to Repubs
Only when it suits their agenda
Remember when the Republicans didn’t like the Feds medeling? They preach freedom and don’t thread on me,
Its still not legal at the federal level, its just not criminalized at the state/local level. This was always a possibility.
Yes, but the Fed in the past always understood it was a quid-pro-quo. The state govs make a killing on statewide legalization, and that income flows up to the fed. Not to mention saving the fed a TON on DEA enforcement when they aren’t tied up with Cannabis enforcement.
It’s how I knew the current political system was a joke before the mask came off of either party. -If neither major party intends to legalize cannabis when it’s so broadly supported by the public, and yet so trivial to public health, then what hope can we hold that anything more meaningful, or difficult will pass? -Don’t answer that. It’s rhetorical.
Someone explained it a while back. Politicians won’t legalize it nationwide because they know people will still vote for them. Which is exactly what has been happening for years.
If they legalize it their reelection chances go down.
That is why people can’t have nice things. It’s a popularity contest but not for the people. It’s for the politicians. 77 million Republican voters thought Trump in office again was a higher priority than low priced legal weed.
The Biden administration was in the process of federally legalizing cannabis through the proper regulatory channels, but couldn’t finish in time before his term ended.
No, he wasn’t even going to legalize it. He was just going to reschedule weed to the same class of drug as
heroinopium, and he didn’t even do that. The fact that he vowed to do that from day one and still did nothing is a perfect example of my point, however. It currently is the same schedule as heroin (schedule 1)… “Rescheduling” is the name of the regulatory process that was ongoing, but could not conclude in time. These things take time to do properly and hold up in court and make them stick, it wasn’t from lack of desire.
When you say it like that it’s almost like we could have convicted and imprisoned Trump but legal-procedings similarly “could not conclude in time. These things take time to do properly and hold up in court and make them stick, it wasn’t from lack of desire.”
It very much was from a lack of desire. They had 4 years.
“Not getting done in time” is going to be the polite description of biden’s legacy. For so many things.
Not sure why Biden couldn’t just issue lots of (meaningful) EOs and then tell courts to try to enforce them if they disagree. Including on the cannabis issue. At the same time, he could initiate/shepherd the longer process, which, as you point out, takes a long time.
Can someone like Taco come in and reverse EOs? Of course, but at least make someone like Taco do that reversal.
Well, it is codified legal at the state level, not just decriminalized. But yes, the feds can ignore it due to it being federally illegal. They’re just trying to show California who’s boss. They could easily go after grow operations in the numerous other states where pot is legal, but they’re choosing to fuck with California just because they can. Same reason why they’re targeting immigration enforcement on blue cities and leaving the red states alone. Cruelty and all that.
They could also go after the illegal grow ups I’m CA, some of which are literally still ran by the cartels.
Those guys are violent and ICE are scared little shit weasels.
Sure, but that would make sense and doesn’t strike fear into the hearts of Americans, so it’s a waste of time for them.
You don’t want to take away weed, you don’t want all the unmotivated stoners to get active, trust me just leave it.
hopefully they do something stupid like arrest joe rogan for weed
I happen to have known lots of the self-medicating type of “stoners” over the years and weed is basically their superpower. Many/most of them are actually overachievers.
The Hollywood stereotype of people doing bong hits and then doing nothing but playing video games and eating bad fast food I guess exists for a reason, but there are many that don’t fit that mold…I don’t think you want to piss them off either, though, since daily use is how they found a way to keep themselves sane and maintain a very high level of productivity.
I knew more than a few body builders during university that would wake and bake and then go hit the gym for many hours. I asked one of them how or why they came across this and many swore it game them more energy, more focus for getting in the zone. He also mentioned Arnold smoked up back in the day, so they figured it would do no harm.
As a stoner myself and somewhat old one at that there’s certainly all types of stoners and I agree, I was trying to be funny but point is a lot of people use it for one reason or another, for many such as the people mentioned in the other reply and myself, it’s important medicine.
I also know several people whose drug usage is the only reason they aren’t setting Republicans on fire
