Last month, FBI Director Kash Patel wished his followers on X a happy Diwali. It did not go over well.
Far-right Christian nationalist and white nationalist accounts flooded his post with bigoted memes and rhetoric. “Go back home and worship your sand demons,” a far-right pastor wrote. “Get the f**k out of my country,” read another reply. Said another, “This is America. We don’t do this.” These responses, some of which were seen millions of times, were on the tamer end of the spectrum.
Similar hostility followed Diwali greetings on X from former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon, as well as posts about the holiday from the White House, the State Department, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
Some Indian American conservatives seem shocked that segments of the political right are now taking aim at them.
I also note that some of the more westernized/ integrated east Indian immigrants are also openly critical about the off the boat ones who show lower levels of integration. Same goes for the Asian population. We’re just a bunch of xenophobic, racist fucks.
India has always had their caste system, which is essentially a systematized cultural bigotry. They grow up with the idea that some Indians are better than others, just by virtue of their birth, and you can’t expect that attitude to disappear just because they came to America.
This isn’t about caste though, usually it’s about self preservation
-
Indian Hindus have had a caste system since it was introduced in the Vedas 3500 years ago. It was initially intended as means of organizing society and not necessarily hierarchical.
-
It wasn’t necessarily systemized until it was legally codified by the British during the colonial era. Indian historians have debated the fluidity of caste prior to this time and concluded that while caste endogamy was clearly the norm, caste was much more fluid historically.
-
There are thousands of castes in India. When the British came across this system, for the purposes of census administration, they limited self identification to only one of the four castes as described in the Vedas, legally codifying it as a hierarchy.
-
The idea of one group of people seeing itself as superior to others is a common theme throughout human history. The US had a race based caste system for most of its history with the addition of legally codified chattel slavery and segregation of African Americans.
-
Pulitzer prize winning author Isabel Wilkerson argues that America still has an invisible caste system to this day.
-
America utilizes DEI to remedy past and present caste discrimination. India outlawed caste discrimination at its inception in article 17 of it’s constitution.
-
Some regressive Indians bring a casteist worldview with them. The government of the United States and its supporters are currently working at establishing a caste system where those of European heritage are high caste and those of other races or heritages are low caste. Both are wrong.
I say this mainly because I come across many people that see caste as a uniquely regressive institution the likes of which has not existed in other societies. Every hierarchical system based on race or ancestry is casteist and essentially every human society in civilizational history has had and likely currently continues to have that bigotry deeply ingrained within.
Nothing you said is wrong. Just adding context for a better understanding.
Valid. Thanks for the clarification, it was really interesting, I appreciate the new knowledge.
Years ago, I had job selling timeshare in Florida, and I worked with a really handsome Indian guy, who always wore a really nice suit. We all hated getting Indian or Asian customers (even our Indian and Asian sales people) because they were notorious for never buying.
I asked the Indian guy about it, thinking he should have a better shot than most. He said:
“The way Indians are, there are a whole bunch of characteristics that have to be in common before they will trust me enough to buy. We could line up perfectly on almost all of them, but if even one thing is off, then they won’t buy from me. But YOU aren’t Indian, so they don’t have those expectations. They aren’t trying to line up their characteristics with yours, because they don’t expect them to match up. They probably still won’t buy from you, but overall, YOU’VE got a better shot at selling to Indians than I do as an Indian.”
And I did sell to a few Indians but all of them were unconventional. Two of them were Indian men married to white women, so clearly they didn’t care what their families thought of anything, and the third was so rich that he looked at the price and said “That’s all? I spend more than that on vacation on watches. Honey, you like this? Yeah? Okay, we’ll take it.”

It’s a little funny when they realize they’re near the bottom of the American caste system
According to MAGA, we’re all at the bottom of the caste system in America, which is referred to as “The Barrel.”
Historically all immigrants seem to want to be the last ones in and close the door
Am an immigrant, not true.
I’m an immigrant and I’m furious they let you in lol
Am an immigrant, this is true for many
Unfortunately that’s true
Not entirely true, many want to bring their family (see settler immigrants in early America) and there are still many that don’t want to eliminate immigration entirely.
Yeah they dont want to integrate at all tho, they want little india over here, they dont mesh with the youth or the elders, last couple immigrant waves of indians arent like pre 9/11 ones, the whole shunning comes because they act like they’re above everyone else and more “advanced” or whatever the fk, the superiority complex they got is wild, they are out here talking sht because you let your daughters wear shorts or do sports, obv you’re gonna hate on them and act like they are weird for not integrating like you have.
Idk why yall are so against immigrants not liking others who dont adapt, we came here for america, they came to do india 2.0 with all the wrong lessons learned
Yeaaaaah, no, that’s a tired, old argument that’s been used by xenophobes at least since Irish and Italian immigrants started coming over (and almost certainly has been used long before that. But I’m not a historian.) Just because people prefer being around those who understand them doesn’t mean they’re “shunning” everyone else.
The entire idea that it’s somehow “wrong” for people to hold onto the way of life they’ve always known is really messed up. Nobody needs to do things the way you do, just because you’re their neighbor. My lifestyle is probably vastly different from yours, and if I were to find a community filled with others like me, that wouldn’t mean we’re “shunning” you or trying to change what you’re doing.
Also don’t forget, integration becomes easier with younger generations. You might think the “old waves” of immigrants integrated “better,” but that’s just what happens when you’re immersed in a culture for a longer period of time. Did the Irish and Italians turn the country into Ireland 2.0 and Italy 2.0? Of course they didn’t. They may develop centers rich in another culture, like “Little Italy” in NYC, but I fail to see what’s wrong with that.
How is this like the third outright racist comment I’ve seen on Lemmy this morning? Fuck off.
Im literally in 2 group chats for us jobs im unqualified for but im prioritized because im indian, if you think ppl are capping they are not, personally I hate my recruiter, man spends 6 months out of the year in india praising india implying my dad has stds because hes a truck driver, thats the typical kind of person I deal with when dealing with ppl straight out of india, they have a massive superiority complex
They want you to only associate with indians, drop all white friends and relationships and talk shit on american culture constantly, this isnt just them, this is common, if you dont speak hindi or punjabi you wont notice
Nobody wants this. Just stop.
And you think they respect gay ppl at all? Trans ppl at all? Theyll be nice openly as is polite but they are the biggest haters of anything like that, defending fobs who literally hate you if you’re on blahaj is wild
BTW my neighbours gay and punjabi her dad accepts her because he came earlier and assimilated, same wave as my parents, they have a different mentality now
Maybe you need to talk to more people before telling others they are out of touch, your hand picked anecdotes from the few Indians you met aren’t representative of a billion different individuals. Yes there’s a lot of idiot conservative type these days, that’s becausea conservative right wing goverment came into power a few years back and this is the result of their propaganda , the same that has happened in the US recently and they share similar view points to American conservatives, non of what you are talking about is exclusive to Indians, growing up an abcd has obviously done a number on your mental health, so I hope you seek some treatment for that, but your parents generation was no different from the current gen, the political and social landscape was just different back then.
Cool anecdote
Yeah my indian ass sharing my lived experiences is the most racist person on this site I bet
I dont respect a whites opinion on racism either way, half of yall sound like you live in the midwest, no diversity in your upbringing just parroting shit you read online, how about you talk to some indian immigrants or children of immigrants for once
Yall think you speak for us all, you speak for no one
My kid just called from his college excited that he had mango lassi French toast. That’s integration
Thats literally assimilation, fusion of cultures, butter chicken pizza is us assimilating
I promise the immigrants other immigrants hate on likely aren’t saints and were actively hating them for assimilating first
My parents get heated when they see them using soap at beaches and sht, they know they arent supposed to, they ignore the rules because they think they are above them, theyll say as much
I know tons of white, US-born people who think it’s okay to throw trash out on the street. They know they aren’t supposed to, they ignore the rules because they think they are above them.
Do brown skinned MAGA really think they are exempt? If so, see Exhibit ‘A’: JD Vances wife.
Oh you mean his soon to be ex wife???
Dumb cunt thought she’d get to sleep in the master’s house if she danced just right. What’s the right word for a race and class traitor?
Yes. Especially upper caste Indian Americans. But your average right winger from bumfuck doesn’t know or care the difference between a Brahman or a Dalit. When it comes to east Asians it’s basically this scene. They think of all west Asian, Arabic, and north African people as basically terrorists. The only group they might actually think of as different is very light skinned Cubans who don’t speak Spanish.
Some Indian American conservatives seem shocked that segments of the political right are now taking aim at them.
“Are we not the right shade of brown?”
There is no right shade of brown to them.
They didn’t think the leopards would eat their faces.
My only surprise is that it took this long. MAGA probably calculated that they could get the Indian vote in the election, so they kept their mouths closed.
Now they are turbocharging their cruelty, and burning the goodwill they have with multiple groups, and the only conclusion can be that they have already determined that they don’t need those votes because there won’t be any more elections.
Whaaat, MAGA being racist and hostile towards members of their own cesspool? Who woulda thought?
Patel should’ve seen this coming, or at least have the epiphany now. But he probably won’t care, given that he’s an asshole who’s in it for his own benefit…
Platform run by a nazi is full of nazis, it’s shocking.
They’re shocked that the leopards are eating their faces?
Its so weird to me that 80% of the undocumented immigrants being deported are christian but these people say nothing. But when Kash Patel talks about Diwali that’s the end of the world.
Its 100% about racism not christianity.
Couldn’t happen to more deserving people.
At first I thought “people” here meant “Indians” instead of “Conservative Indian Politicians” mentioned at the end.
Reddit has truly ruined my mindset about the internet.
I mean, racism against brown people ranges pretty far and wide on the internet and I’d frankly be shocked if lemmy proved to be an exception
At this point they’re going after anyone who could so much as get a tan. If you aren’t almost translucent and an evangelical christian, you are their enemy.
To be honest, as a South Asian, racists have always been openly bigotted in our direction. It was never really taboo in most Western countries. We have no StopAsianHate or BLM equivalent.
That being said I appreciate the author for highlighting the issue. Despite our faults (by virtue of being human) we value family and education as ideals and that has helped us create prosperity, especially in the US where Indians are the highest earning demographic. This rubs some the wrong way, even if it is fairly earned.
Though its not surprising, it is disappointing when it occurs in a nation that sees itself as a land of opportunity.
a nation that sees itself as a land of opportunity.
This nation has always been divided, even before it was a nation. My ancestor was a pastor in present day new england in ~1630 and was arrested for baptizing too late on the lord’s day by the strict puritans on massachussets. Then there was the civil war (which never really ended).
China<>Taiwan is a civil war… I bet if I looked into it, Pakistan and India’s beef is considered a civil war in terms of why it started.
People think racism is a white export (import? heh). Try telling a person from Thailand they look Vietnamese or vice versa. Clan-based war is the human way. I spent the first 40 years of my life thinking we conquered human nature (despite my family members’ behaviors - I thought they were just stupid).
Nope - water is wet, and people kill people from other clans. Xenophobia is a hell of a drug.
Sectarianism will always exist. One can argue that the resurgence in white supremacy here is a manifestation of that (a group of Europeans and their descendants thinking their sect is superior / innately worthy of more resources).
I think one would be hard pressed to defend the argument that racism is a “white export” but what is undeniably true is that colonial Europeans were obsessed with race and saw the world through the lens of a race based caste system.
They assumed that all human progress could be distilled to lighter skin people being more advanced and darker skin people being more primitive.
They created entire scientific fields around this and interpreted their religion in a way to support this.
In India, they interpreted indigineous systems of social hierarchy such as caste and took them a step further, defining those that were darker skinned and lower caste as inherently criminal, keeping them under the watchful eye of their surveillance state.
They perceived lighter skin Muslims and upper caste Hindus as more “civilized” than darker skin low caste Hindus and gave the former administrative opportunities because of this perceived superiority.
They had an explicit policy of divide and conquer, promoting hateful and divisive rhetoric that resulted in communal violence so that people would be distracted from fighting against them.
Then when Nazi Germany destroyed their infrastructure in WW2 such that they could no longer financially maintain their institutions of colonialism, they drew an arbitrary border which cut through incredibly culturally and linguistically diverse communities and left.
In summary: Would there be animosity between Pakistan and India without the mismanagement of partition and the empire going out of its way to promote hate? Probably.
Would racism and sectarian violence not exist in the absence of the European world view being spread globally through colonialism? No we would still have that.
Were these made substantially worse by colonial powers promoting those divisions around the world over centuries? I think absolutely yes.
So while I take your point that such divisions didn’t originate in the West, it very much was a core component of their worldview and they stoked and exacerbated those divisions everywhere they went. I find it difficult to let colonists off the hook for that.
But to your general point on human nature, I agree. The reason why I hold America toa different standard is it calls itself the land of oppurunity and takes pride in that.
Yup, that’s why it’s such a whistle when phrases like “enemy within” and “bad hombres” are uttered.
They are just divide and conquer in a new wrapper to distract poor people to hate other poor people, while the increasingly stratified ruling class consolidates the country’s wealth.
People still fall for this shit, hell I still do from time to time. The only way you counter it is with education and being worldly, which is intentionally becoming harder to do nowadays
The only way you counter it is with education and being worldly
Well said. It really shouldn’t be harder with the technological advantages we have today but clearly the powers that be go out of their way to make sure it’s not used for that purpose.
Human nature is a copout. Humans have removed themselves so far from nature that it isn’t even relevant anymore.
Its totally natural to fear humans that look significantly different than anyone you are familiar with. That’s believable as a basic survival instinct.
But that isn’t the world people are born in. We aren’t born hundreds of miles away from people who look radically different…often times we are born with them in the same room.
The problem is cultural and, as a result, inherited. In the modern world, racism is a learned behavior.
Then it reciprocates, and then becomes a self-fulfilled prophecy.
People suck, yea, but I’m done believing racism is human nature. That’s racist conditioning. Its taking a believable factoid like “humans naturally fear people who look different” because yeah, it makes sense, from a survival standpoint, in a world where your breeding pool was separated by an impenetrable mountain for thousands of years. It doesn’t make sense now.
Just shake off that evolutionary trait, amirite?!
This rubs some the wrong way, even if it is fairly earned.
Sadly, it’s less to do with your prosperity and a lot more to do with the fact that you’re not white.
From the regressive perspective, if you’re nonwhite and poor you’re a leech on society and if you are well off you must have took it from them by gaming the system. The core is not seeing others as equally human.
Being financially secure is a multiplier to their bigotry as they feel it challenges 1) their collective power and 2) their worldview that anyone that shares their melanin level is innately superior in every way.
a nation that sees itself as a land of opportunity.
A nation whose propaganda claims it is a land of opportunity for all.
The reality is (and has always been) very different.
Honestly, it seems like racism against Indian people is disgustingly accepted even here in Canada. I know some otherwise very progressive people who will just straight up make very racist generalisations/commente without a second thought and for some reason it’s just accepted
In no way excusing the behaviour, but there’s a massive exodus of people from India globally, and as a visible minority, it makes it easy to pick on them in particular.
Globally the money is accumulating towards wealthy individuals but it’s somehow easier to blame the new neighbour because he puts spices in his food.
They are damn good spices and put my American cooking to shame. Share your secrets to Vindaloo or GTFO.
Kashmiri chili powder. This is not to be confused with either “chili powder” or paprika, it’s a COMPLETELY different spice.

I’m lucky in that we have an entire store that sells nothing but oils and vineagars.
Welp, now I have plans to my next Sunday dinner.
Fuck yeah!
Garam masala

I mean when I eat a lot of curry I smell like curry
I’ll always associate curry with COViD, LoL. For the first wave of pandemic where there were no test strips yet …… I was still hoping my family had picked up some sort of cold virus. Until i made curry. I make it very spicy, yet three of us could not taste or smell it. It was a fascinating experience! Followed up with ghost pepper sauce.
Spent any time in Surrey? Lol
Gf used to live there and whenever we went to the mall (literally the only thing to do in Surrey BTW) there were an alarming amount of young guys visibly staring at her chest etc
India is culturally broken, change my mind
Richmond is almost all Chinese people and when I’m there I never feel unsafe and people aren’t staring at me just because I’m white
Also if you go on tiktok and intentionally end up on the punjabi side of the algorithm theres tons of shit about how to take from food banks cuz it’s “free food”, or stuff about only renting and hiring other punjabis, etc etc
Drives me insane they hate the cheap rent for indians only, those conditions are ass thats why its cheap and the indians know to expect and tolerate the shitty conditions, and also they typically wont allow cooking meat and sht, these are the downsides yet all they see is cheap price indians only they must be monsters, its like cheap housing around indians for ppl who dont speak english well or make much money
Its often a one bedroom in an indian household, with daughters, thats why its usually woman only too, but they act like theyre perverts, its normal for indian households to support immigrant woman and accept them more because its safer for the woman in the house
What did these people think white Christian nationalists were? What did they think a white Christian ethnostate was going to be?
Some Indian American conservatives seem shocked that segments of the political right are now taking aim at them.
But but but, we are different brown people,we are not those dirty Latinos,we are clean Indians!
No no no, not THOSE indians, those aren’t even calle… Ok, never mind, we are the GOOD brown people, you have to like us!
Am I close? Fucking leopards again!
Model minorities
It was about when Trump got back into power that me and my pals had the conversation that any colour but white will be fair game. What we got completely wrong, was just how quickly and how openly this would run.
Some of these people are truly despicable and deserve all the hate they get and more …. But even they don’t deserve this.
Really, you couldn’t find anything better to object to Kesh Patel than wishing people a happy Diwali?
I don’t like his speech cadence
