In April, comedian Jena Friedman had a strange encounter in Vancouver airport. She had just performed a Ted talk about the future of comedy and was heading home to the US, when someone she thought worked for airport security quizzed her about her visit.

Thinking he was probing for visa infringements, “I just said I was doing comedy. Then he asked: ‘What do you joke about?’ Stupidly, I lightly flirted with him, and was like: ‘Everything other than airport security!’ He didn’t react at all. Then I realised he was US border control. He asked again: ‘What do you joke about?’”

Friedman is a veteran of The Daily Show and The Late Show, and her standup comedy often features excoriating routines at the expense of the political establishment. “I just froze because I am a political comedian and I didn’t know what to say. Then he said: ‘Do you joke about politicians?’”

She made it home, but the incident stuck with her. Friedman lives in LA, and the recent actions of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement “detaining anyone and everyone who looks a certain way” put her on high alert. “It was such a quick, on its face benign, interaction,” she says. “But it did feel like a scene out of The Handmaid’s Tale. I’m a blonde, white woman who looks like a Republican’s wife and I have an American passport. But what if I had said ‘Yes?’ Don’t we want to live in a country where we can joke about politicians, where we can joke about anything?”

“I joke about whatever the fuck I want to joke about.” is the correct answer to that question.

It’s fascism. Plain and simple. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and it seems like we’ve completely forgotten everything we learned from WW2. This is what we were supposed to be remembering when we were honoring veterans and thanking people for their service.

Which Vancouver was she at? If this is US border patrol, in uniform, in Canada, asking questions about whether you joke about US politics… that’s no better than the Chinese police stations. Does the government know US border patrol is interrogating people on Canadian soil?

They know. And yes customs can operate there. But only on flights that are destined for the US.

And really the questions are pretty basic… You only need to tell them that you’re returning home if you’re a citizen (and show your passport of course).

Edit: Not so fun fact, the act let’s Canada do the same thing. Problem is that the USA has way more airports to man… But they’re planning on doing the same for us as well. So it’s not like Canada is any better than the USA.

Nonsense, I’ve been told many a time that the pre-facism is fine and doesn’t need to be discussed or mentioned if it’s Maple flavored, or any other flavor pertaining to whatever European nation is doing similar things.

To anyone not in the know, this isn’t the first time anyone critical of the Trump admin has been questioned at airports. A few months ago there was a streamer detained and questioned over their political coverage against Trump. It seems to be a growing trend
