Have had alerts about tsunami currents yesterday and today in NZ. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/568466/live-warnings-in-place-as-tsunami-currents-reach-new-zealand-shores
In an evacuation centre as we speak.
Stay safe
Thanks! Luckily, it seems like a nothing Burger. It’s been one hour since the tsunami was supposed to hit us.
The first tsunami wave is forecast to reach Hawaii just after 7:15 p.m. local time. Destructive tsunami waves are expected, according to Oahu Emergency Management.
Hawaii local time is UTC-10; Hawaii apparently does not use Daylight Savings Time.
So for people elsewhere interested in watching the live coverage that will, I expect, show up:
https://everytimezone.com/?t=68896080%2C13b
That’s 10:15 PM, Pacific Daylight Savings time here in California.
Will be early morning in Europe.
https://www.tsunami.gov/ says that they expect it to be 1-3 meters at Hawaii:
PHEB/1-3 meters/ - 1-3 meters Hawaii Issued at: 7/29/2025, 6:50:40 PM
1-3m doesn’t sound like much until people realize that it’s likely to be 1-3m of ocean behind it and not just 1 off wave like what you see on the beach
🏄🏄♂️🏄♀️
For the benefit of anyone who doesn’t already know, tsunamis are not surfable waves in any way. Don’t be going there expecting a giant Hokusai-style epic wave to ride into the city on.
One could literally surf the city, if one were so inclined. Probably get crushed and drowned if you fall off.
Cowabunga dude!
I’ve been watching it closely, 24" (61cm) waves in Japan, pretty much nothing in Hawaii (flooded parking lot).
It could change, but, yeah, not bad so far.
