I had 4 housemates to help cover the mortgage
A life without kids is a life with less responsibilities and more freedom
Hurray!
I didn’t fully appreciate this until after I had my two children at age 21. No regrets of course, things would just have been different if I had had more time to plan.
… wait, you’re the actual Devil’s Panties?
Hi! Someone’s been posting your stuff here so I’ve been enjoying it though that. Thanks for the continued work!
Also, funny how things turn out, huh?
Just because I’m married with kids still doesn’t make that my life’s goal. Making impactful unifying art doesn’t stop because I’m a mom. I drew comics in the nursery while feeding my newborn at 3am. My priorities have not changed.
Sorry if this came out swinging. I’m very much a “you’re gonna have to pry the pencil out of my cold dead hand” mindset when it comes to comics or any question of doing comics.
Yeah, no worries, thanks for the quick correction and all the comics throughout the years
Nah it’s fine, anyone who has read your comments would expect a reply like that 😂 it’d be more confusing if you didn’t come out swinging.
holy fuck i just realized i achieved my life’s goal at the ripe age of, uh, 17. wanted to be a professional musician. went out busking. someone put a one in my case. it’s all i made that day but MISSION ACCOMPLISHED FUCK YEAH. I never said i necessarily had to be a good musician or nothin
I didn’t even know my current goals were a thing when I was 17.
I’m currently solo-creating a physiotherapy game console that helps sick kids have an enjoyable and better experience doing their health-preserving physiotherapy. That’s my current hobby project. And it’s all open source with the build plans available for parents who can’t afford to buy a ready-made version.
At age 17 I didn’t even know that’s something one can do.
What I mean, it’s good to have goals, but life isn’t over when you achieve them.
Good on you for not selling it to some “Healthcare” company that’ll sell it for 10 grand a pop, or 9 after insurance.
Thanks! Current target price is €100 for the assembled version. That just about covers the production cost and assembly time, but not the development time.
But if I ask for any more, it might get difficult to finance for some families and difficult to justify for even more families (even though the therapy adherence goes way up with my device, but the parents don’t really know that before they buy).
I don’t have any certifications and stuff behind that, so insurance pays nothing for it…
Ohhh, finally the original author came to the fedivers !
The account is 2 years old, but hopefully @JennieBreeden@lemmy.sdf.org will be more active!
My mother has a PhD, has lived in three continents, at 70 was still windsurfing and skiing, plants a ton of shit, has written two books, has always painted, and had her works in exhibitions… And has two children, and six grandchildren.
It’s you who sets your goals and limitations (mainly)
*
if you get lucky and have a nice spawnWell, my sister is nice. 1out of 2 is OK, I guess ;)
Why are you taking about your sister?
They’re jokingly interpreting “spawn” to refer to offspring, or children, opposed to your intended implication of circumstances of birth.
I’m not a native speaker and not the best at English so 😵
Ahhh, no worries, that’s totally fair! I’m glad I over-explained it then 😄
Well well look what we have here.
“(mainly)” doing the heavy lifting right here
Yeah, one can’t exactly control being born in poverty, health issues, accidents… the list goes on. It’s true though that you can still try with whatever you got. Climbing a tree is not reaching the sky, but it is off the ground
This is also True.
She does come from an upper middle class family in the 1st world, so she didn’t have to overcome poverty or major disabilities, but she did make the best of opportunities, and worked her ass off. Millions of women in her cohort were perfectly OK with being a housewife.
Is this an older one? I say that not because it looks worse, just a bit… looser, like the designs aren’t as pinned-down. 2006?
also, owning a house at 26? barely from this century
totally possible if you choose the right parents
shit, was that a preorder bonus?
The self-insert(sorry, but it’s obvious) character also looks like they’re aiming for younger.
Just always liked this comic’s art, reminds me of Daria.
Yeah, think around 2006.
Then she ended up going and getting a husband and kids anyway! But it was the bonus round at that point.
Dude with eyebrow piercing, surprisingly conservative
If that was a Punisher t-shirt, I’d say I’d be much less surprised.
I don’t think 2006 had it appropriated yet.
It’s a series about killing “social undesirables,” it was appropriated immediately.
I was there.
It’s true. The people sporting Punisher merch were usually rightwing douchebags. Back then the rightwing part wasn’t as apparent, but you knew once you heard the Pantera blasting out of their Dodge ram.
We are the other side of the coin from a thread on 4chan making fun of blue-haired trans people. If we threw a rock straight down from this point in the internet, it would nail an Anon in the crotch.
I have always found it strange how having kids is considered a milestone to achieve in life. I don’t get it.
I mean, your life after and before cannot be compared, so it is a milestone
True
I always found it strange how <insert random thing I don’t care about here> is considered a milestone to achieve in life. I don’t get it.
Fair - but you get what I mean? Society, and I feel like you see this in TV/movies a lot, but they put some kind of halo on “being a parent”. It’s significant for sure, but it’s a huge responsibility. Out of all the things people could be doing, I just don’t get it. It can be rewarding I’m sure, but in these times, I don’t get it. Idk I just see it a irresponsible with how everything is rn. Just my take…
It’s spelled ‘millstone’.
because when you have kids your life is over
My life-goal I set for myself in 4th grade was “be a better father than my dad or step-father”. Life handed my wife and I twins, right off the bat, and our second son less than two years later. I made more money and worked far fewer hours, so suffice to say I changed thousands of daipers and mixed/warmed sooo much formula.
Somehow, my wife and I did far less partying after she got a better job and the kids were in school, and she locked in on the idea of your comment versus any adult life outside of work and chores like some sort of core belief.
End of the day, I realized I had set and basically stepped ON(as opposed to having to jump over) an incredibly low bar for myself, and it was more like my life began when I had cleared it, but “raising a family” has been a surprisingly lonely experience. Having to fight against my wife to encourage every step of their growth towards independence and personal responsibility isn’t exactly helping me cope with how little I get to see them these days.
I remember reading this comic back in the day. 19 years ago …
This comic from the 50s is really ahead of its time
This wasn’t the 50s, do the math! 2006 was 50 years ago
“spay your cat girl” love it
What is the stereotypical male life goal? I wanna use this against the guys in my life.
get married, have kids, buy/build a house, get a nice retirement plan and a gold watch, have a nice midlife crisis, eat a really nice steak that’s too big for me and finish the whole thing (and this is the important part) while a bunch of people watch and maybe I win a t-shirt, lose a pie-eating contest at some kind of local food festival, that kind of thing
one of my personal ones is to eat one of everything to maintain my dominant position on the food chain, but that’s just a lil bit of fun
Build a house, have a son, plant a tree.
wrestle a gorilla and win, obviously
800 pound silverback gorilla or sun bear. one or the other, no in between
Work 40+ hours and own a house, car, and wife.
I don’t think you can own wives nowadays!!
Can you fix this thing that I could totally fix if you weren’t here, but I’m asking you anyway because I love you?
Drops everything
Achieving gender equality.
Move out of the basement.
Mines always been to provide for my family. I dont think that really helps what youre going for. I never thought getting married and having kids was a woman’s goal, its a lot of peoples goal. Maybe guys lean more toward “have a son” instead of “having kids”?
I don’t know. Maybe fell a tree, buy a nice car and then die by drowning in pussy?
Delight.
I thought the joke would be about the Houses at first.
